5 Habits for Winter Wellness

If you’re anything like me, the time between November & March can feel like an eternity!

(Here in Canada anyway)

Shorter days & cooler (sometimes frigid) temperatures mean less time outside and more hours spent in the dark!  I’m a nature junky. I’m outside as much as I can be. Sunshine and fresh air are my jam!  So the shift that happens come winter here in the north, totally throws off my routine.

If you feel more tired than usual, lack motivation, crave carbs & sugar, are irritable or have zero desire for social interaction, you could very well be suffering from a case of the winter blues. An even more serious condition is SAD (seasonal affective disorder). If you’re feeling like you’re in more than just a little funk, have depressing or suicidal thoughts, please seek professional help!

I have found a few habits that really work for me and my family, but are certainly not a cure for real, diagnosed conditions. However, they definitely won’t hinder any treatment you’re currently undergoing (if any)!

Here are my Top 5 Winter Wellness Habits:

1. GET OUTSIDE

This is the easiest, most inexpensive thing anyone can do. I know it’s cold (and sometimes wet), but fresh, crisp air and being surrounded by nature is just good for the soul!  There are days (ok, almost everyday) that I could say ‘NOPE, these yoga pants & hoody are my friends. I will not abandon them.’

But guys, the second I step into that clean, cold air I feel refreshed!  A 30 minute walk and my whole outlook for the day changes! Instant mood booster.

Taking up an outdoor activity in the winter is also a great way to enjoy the cold. No, you don’t have to jump into downhill skiing if that’s not your thing. But something as simple as snowshoeing can motivate you to breach the comfort of your cooped up house.

No link necessary. Just get out there!

2. SEASONAL DIET

Diet may seem like an obvious point in this list. But it’s one that many people fall short on and wonder why they feel so crummy!

Eating as locally and seasonally as possible is so good for you. I know we tend to reach for carb loaded, sugar goodness when we want comfort. But there is a better way!!! All those processed, packaged goodies will give you a giant let down the moment you eat your last bite.

My go-to meals this time of year are warm and quick. Think soups, stews, chili, casseroles and anything that I can toss in one skillet!  I love that these meals are versatile. You can change out your protein, starch & veggies and have a completely different entree. The beauty of them is you can incorporate all food groups rather easily and enjoy a meal that keeps you full & satisfied!  We are so lucky in this part of the world to have access to all types of food all year long. But buying from local farmers and eating produce that is in season is the best way to support your health!

3. WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS

Oh, here we go with the pill popping talk! But wait, hear me out.

It is almost impossible to get all of our daily vitamins & minerals with just food. Our food is mass produced and not nearly as nutrient dense as it once was. And we live crazy, hectic lives. You would literally need to be eating all day to get the recommended intake of nutrients your body needs to function at its highest capacity. A body that is functioning at its peak will heal faster, fight off sickness better, rest sounder and recharge quicker!

Taking a high quality, whole food supplement in conjunction to clean, healthy eating is just adding an insurance policy to your physical and mental health.  You’ll feel more alert, focused and ready to take on anything!

4. ESSENTIAL OILS

Don’t run from me on this topic either. For any of you who know me personally, know I’m a modern hippie! I may not look like one, bu I’m obsessed with natural everything, and oils just fit into that. My husband teases me for being an 80 year old women all the time! Mainly because I’m drawn to old school ways of taking care of our home and health.

Simple and natural is the way to go folks!  I have had amazing results using essential oils for mental and emotional support. I’m an anxious, overwhelmed mess 99% of the time. Or at least I used to be. Combine that with the gloom of winter and I could be downright miserable.

A diffuser and oils that encourage an uplifting and peaceful state have saved me! I’ve made them part of my morning and nightly routine and have them diffusing throughout the day.  A citrus oil in your water will change the game.

Quality is key here! There are lots of oils on the market right now, but they are not created equal. Anything you are going to breath in all day, apply to your skin, or take internally needs to pure. No fillers, synthetics or preservatives!

5. GET COZY

Winter comes ever year for about 4-5 months. We might as well embrace it!

A hot drink sitting by the window, a good book by the fire, board games with loved ones after enjoying good food. Personally, I rather enjoy staying in my lounge wear and having a little drama of something warm by our wood fire.

Even if you don’t enjoy any outdoor sports or activities, make a point of going out with friends. Or having people over! Social interaction is so important, especially when we are stuck indoors most of the winter.  Find a hobby that will keep your hands & mind busy, while being comfy and cozy!

Book, Drink & Board Game inspiration:

I know the snow and cold may not be our favourite time of year, but small changes in our daily routine and habits can help us all survive (and maybe even enjoy it a little) with our sanity intact!
