Autumn in a Bottle

This little bottle of magic right here (see photo) has been a staple in my home for some time now. To me, it literally smells like Fall encapsulated in a tiny jar! The On Guard Blend from DoTerra is spicy, warming, woodsy and an absolute rock-star support oil. It combines the uplifting Wild Orange, spicy Clove & Cinnamon, and the refreshing Eucaluptus & Rosemary! The list of uses for this gem is lengthy, but I'll start with a few of the basic ways I incorporate this heavy hitter on the regular in our house.

First and foremost, what is this oil good for??

It's called DoTerra's Protective Blend, as it combats viral and bacterial threats to the body. Hence, why it will always have a place in my 'medicine' cabinet. During cold and flu season, the bottom of our feet get a roller ball of this applied morning and night to keep our immune systems running at their best. I also diffuse it through the fall and winter months when sniffles and coughs tend to be at their peak. At the first sign of anyone feeling a bit off or under the weather, this baby is in the diffuser. Diffusing any type of oil is great for purifying and cleansing the air. On Guard being a champ at germ busting makes it a great one to use this time of year. Even diffusing it once a day can cut down on the airborne pathogens floating around your home.

An angry esophagus is par the course during this season as well. A drop of On Guard in a warm glass of water is an amazing sore throat tonic. Gargling a few times a day with it will help clear any scratching or tenderness. I also love to use a drop or two diluted in a carrier oil along my throat and the sides of my neck. If that sore throat is accompanied by a cough, you can massage a diluted drop over your chest as well. I've recently made a small spray bottle of witch hazel with several drops of On Guard as an easy, portable hand sanitizer. Germs be gone! No more strong, chemical, alcohol based ones for this mama.

On the same germy note, this oil is a fantastic surface cleaner. My DIY all purpose cleaner is literally just 20-25 drops of On Guard diluted with water and vinegar in a 350 ml spray bottle. Easy peasy, but oh so powerful. I also always add a few drops to my mop bucket to keep the floors squeaky clean (who knows what our boots or pets paws drag into this place).

Having a contractor hubby, a wild 1 1/2 year old, and my clumsy self under one roof, bumps and scraps are kind of the norm. On Guard to the rescue again! A drop or two in a carrier oil can be applied to cuts, burns, scrapes and even bug bites to encourage healing and keep infection at bay. I usually come at my family and friends with this concoction at the first sign of a cold sore too!

An added bonus of using essential oils for cleaning and on surfaces around your home, is that they are natural. No chemical residues are left behind. This is a major reason why I've utilized them in every aspect of our life & home that I possibly can. I love knowing that my little one and my pets aren't being exposed to toxins and synthetic chemicals on a daily basis.

Are there ways you can lighten the toxic load in your home? Maybe you're looking for natural alternatives for anything from self care to cleaning products.
